James J. Dolan, aggressive partner of L.G. Murphy. Courtesy Anderson–Freeman Museum, Lincoln Historic Site.

Chisum found key allies in two young men of ambition and education who moved to Lincoln at the time of “the celebrated trouble.” Alexander McSween was an attorney and a devout Presbyterian who came to Lincoln in 1875 with his wife Sue, a lovely and cultivated woman. An excellent attorney, McSween handled the legal affairs of The House, but became increasingly troubled by L.G. Murphy’s questionable practices. Murphy’s first partner, Emil Fritz, died of heart and kidney disease in 1874 in Germany. Fritz, who never married, left a $10,000 insurance policy, and Murphy claimed payment for a debt. McSween traveled to New York and pressed the claim successfully, but kept the large payment to cover his expenses. Murphy sued for embezzlement, but McSween was exonerated during the 1878 spring term of the Lincoln County District Court. John Chisum was present during the proceedings to lend support as a friend.
